The much anticipated Trademark Sunrise Period began this week for .CO and will continue until June 10th, 2010.   Safenames is accepting sunrise requests and will be processing client trademark documentation with the registry.  Be sure to have your trademark documentation in order.  All trademark documentation will be validated by the registry and domains will be awarded after the Trademark Sunrise Period has ended.

Even if you are not marketing in Colombia, Safenames is advising trademark holders with important brands or high traffic Web sites with trademarks to register the .CO, since it is just one letter from .COM.  The Colombian registry has indicated that they will be marketing the domain extension as a generic extension just like .COM.  Don’t risk your brand falling into the hands of a cybersquatter once the Land Rush Registration Period begins on June 21st, 2010.

In order to qualify for registering .CO domains in the Sunrise Trademark Period, you must have a trademark of national effect within your respective country or region and it must have been registered by July 30, 2008.  If multiple trademark holders place a registration request for the same domain, the domain will be sent to domain auction house chosen by the registry and awarded to the highest bidder.  If you would like to register a .CO with a trademark that was registered after July 30th, 2008 or a non-trademarked domain you will need to submit your request in the Land Rush that will begin in June.
