A recent update revealed that the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) has received more than 5,000 trademark registrations since it launched in March. The breakdown of who (i.e., trademark holders) has submitted these first registrations is quite interesting. Deloitte, the organization which is managing the centralized trademark database for the new gTLD program, reported the following:
- 23% relate to scientific or teaching apparatus (e.g., lifesaving medical equipment to computer software)
- 22% relate to advertising or business management
- 16% relate to sports or entertainment brands
- 0.8% relate to pharmaceutical and/or medical products
- 1% relate to cosmetic goods
- 10% relate to clothing and footwear
Interestingly, of the 5,000+ TMCH registrations, 44% are from US filers and just 10% from Europe. Most of the registrations—nearly 66%—have been registered for one year, which is a bit surprising considering three and five-year registration periods are available and would likely cover the entire first round of new gTLD launches.
ICANN signed the first new gTLD registry contracts this week, and is expected to delegate the first domains this fall. As a registered agent in the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH), Safenames wants to ensure that our current customers and other trademark holders are prepared for the new gTLD expansion. Trademark holders must enter their mark in the TMCH to participate in the TM Sunrise Periods for new gTLDs. Learn more about the TMCH.
