The first new “GEO” top level domain name extension, .BERLIN, which represents the German city of Berlin, has launched and is currently in Trademark Sunrise. The TM Sunrise period is specifically for trademark holders to register domains that are the exact match (e.g., trademarkname.TLD) to the existing corresponding trademark(s). The new .berlin domain extension is the first of many new gTLDs to launch that will be used for businesses, organizations, and individuals that want to establish an online naming presence for a specific city. The intended purpose of GEO TLDs is to allow businesses, organizations, and individuals to register shorter, more relevant domains that represent their business within a specific local geographic community–much like how .EU, .ASIA, etc. (ccTLDs) are used to denote a country or region.
