TM Sunrise for .LONDON, another New “GEO” TLD, is now open. This is among the first of many new gTLDs to launch, as part of ICANN’s new gTLD Program, for businesses, organizations and individuals that want to create an online naming presence in a specific city (geographic location).
This new .london domain extension is meant to enable businesses, organizations, and individuals to establish an online naming presence by registering shorter, more relevant domains that represent their business within a specific local geographic community–much like how .EU, .ASIA, etc. (ccTLDs) are used to denote a country or region.
It is important to note that the TM Sunrise and Landrush phases will run concurrently for .london. The TM Sunrise phase is specifically for trademark holders to register domains that are the exact match (e.g., trademarkname.TLD) to the existing corresponding trademark(s) and who have received a valid signed mark data (SMD) file issued by the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). The Landrush ‘rules’ for registering .london domains during this time period are slightly different:
- Domains that are applied for during this phase (between April 29 – July 31, 2014) and have an smd file will be treated as a TM Sunrise application.
- Domains that are applied for during this phase (between April 29 – July 31, 2014) and do not have a smd file will be processed as a Landrush application.
Should someone else have a valid trademark for a particular domain name ordered during this phase, the name will go to auction. General Availability is scheduled to open September 9, 2014 and domains will be registered on a first come, first served basis unless the name is blocked or reserved by the registry..
