The NIC Chile, the Registry that operates the .cl country code TLD for Chile, recently changed the requirements for registering .cl domain names. Now, any individual, organization/company, or entity may register a .cl domain name(s) as long as they are able to provide a valid/official, nationally recognized ID (e.g., passport or tax identification). Registering additional domains allows you to strengthen your domain portfolio within a particular market. If you currently conduct business in Chile, or are planning to do so, registering country code domain names is a great way to enhance your naming strategy.

If you have any questions about this requirement change for .cl domains, or would like to register a domain name, please contact your Safenames account manager. You may also contact us in the UK at +44 1908 200022 (emeasales@safenames.net) or in the US at +1 703 574 5313 (nasales@safenames.net).

Donuts pushes the Trademark (TM) Sunrise launch date for .works, .expert, and .tienda. TM Sunrise for all three of these new gTLDs was originally scheduled to open today, February 25, 2014. The registry (Donuts) pushed the launch date for .works and .expert to March 4, 2014, but has not yet provide a revised launch date for the .tienda extension.

It’s important to note that only trademark holders who have received a valid signed mark data (SMD) file issued by the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) may apply for an exact match domain name during the Sunrise period for any new gTLD(s). If you have any questions about the launch of these new Donuts gTLDs, please contact your Safenames account manager. The GMO registry has recently announced that .Nagoya, one of three new GeoTLDs for Japan, will launch February 20th, 2014, followed by .tokyo, which is scheduled to launch in April, and .yokohama, which will launch later this year. Dot Nagoya represents the City of Nagoya, which is part of Japan’s third largest metropolitan region with a population of almost 9 million.

This launch is exciting, as these three new extensions are among the first ever GeoTLDs to launch as part of ICANN’s new gTLD Program. These new domain extension are meant to enable businesses, organizations, and individuals to establish an online naming presence by registering shorter, more relevant domains that represent their business within a specific local geographic community–much like how .EU, .ASIA, etc. (ccTLDs) are used to denote a country or region.

If you have questions about these new GeoTLDs please contact your Safenames account manager. You may also contact us in the UK at +44 1908 200022 (emeasales@safenames.net) or in the US at +1 703 574 5313(nasales@safenames.net).
