.HK (Hong Kong) IDN.IDN launches Priority Registration Period for existing registrants of .HK domains

The registry for .HK domains names, recently announced that anyone who has registered the ASCII or English version of a .HK domain name, can now register the equivalent domain name in a Chinese .HK extension .香港 during the Pre-Launch Priority Registration (PLPR) period from 22 February to 10 March, 2011.

The full Chinese .香港 Internationalize Domain Name will make it easier for your customers and prospective clients to remember your Web address and the IDN.IDN removes language barriers. By using both the .HK and .香港, you can increase the marketing potential of your brand in Hong Kong and China.

Following a recent ICANN board meeting, ICANN has granted Telnic, the .TEL registry, the ability to offer both short (e.g. jj.tel) and numeric-only (e.g. 442074676450.tel or 888.tel) .TEL domain names for registration through accredited registrars. This will enable more choice for businesses and individuals when seeking to register a .TEL domain.  For example, organizations with numeric only trademarks or with two letter brands will be able to register their .TEL names and individuals will be able to register unique or lucky numbers as online identifier. The specific date and process for launching short and numeric-only .TEL names has not been made public, but updates will be communicated as more details become available.

If you have any questions regarding two character or numeric domains for .TEL registrations, please contact your Safenames account manager.

.EU registrants will be pleased to know that EURID, the .EU registry, has announced that they will allow multi-year terms for new registrations and renewals of .EU domains beginning in mid-February.  While all generic TLDs offer multi-year registration terms, many ccTLDs only allow a single year term.  The new multi-year term will certainly be more convenient for those customers who plan keep their .EU into the future.

If you have any questions regarding multi-year terms for .EU registrations, please contact your Safenames account manager.

The Sunrise period for CO.NO domains has concluded on January 31st.  Trademark holders no longer have the ability to submit a domain application with priority.  However, the General Availability (‘Go Live’) of CO.NO will begin on Tuesday 22 February 2011 at 14:00 GMT.  During General Availability, application requests can be made by individuals or companies without any restriction or priority rights, and will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.  Unlike .NO domains, registration of CO.NO domains does not require a local presence in Norway and there are no limitations to the number of domains that can be registered by the same person or entity.  A list of reserved domains has been established by the registry, that includes offensive or confusing names and certain premium names, that will not available for registration

The registry has communicated that all successful Sunrise applications will be provisioned and will be active before the start of the General Availability period.

If you have any questions regarding general availability for CO.NO registrations, please contact your Safenames account manager.
